Extinction Rebellion stages woodchip protest at Gutwein's office

Protesters gathered in front of the Launceston office at 9am, pilling up the woodchips and displaying signs with messages on climate change.

Extinction Rebellion spokesperson Steve Saunders said every living tree was vital for the survival of the planet and humankind, as 83 per cent of Tasmania's logged native forest was woodchipped and exported.

"That is not sustainable," he said.

"Our trees, our forests are the most carbon dense in the world. We can't hide behind the fact we have renewable energy, that's not the full story.

"We're contributing to global climate change with the logging of our native forests, locked up carbon which has now been previously emitted and will not be reabsorbed within the next 100 years."

Premier Gutwein was in Hobart during the protest, on his way to inform Governor Kate Warner of his intention to call an election for May 1.

With the state election announced mere hours after the protect began, Mr Saunder's said they would continue to push their climate change message.

"We don't care who gets in, as long as they act on it," he said.

"We just want action."
