Council looks to "re-imagine" Brisbane St Mall's tiered seating

Coffee Republic owner Robin Smith put forward a motion last year to modify the seating at the mall's west end to "design-out-crime" and anti-social behaviour.

In December the City of Launceston council agreed to consider the motion, and voted on Thursday to review it as part of the re-imagining of the mall.

The council's community and place network general manager Leanne Hurst said proposed re-designs were being considered and costed, with a report to be presented at a future meeting.

"As part of the review of how this design element of the mall is represented, the Place Making Team is also reviewing the form and function of the tiered seating in the mall," she said.

A review into the seating will join the review underway on the Tasmanian tiger statues in the mall, which was announced in April 2020.

Two statues were removed last month and the council plans to reposition all 10 bronze statues to improve pedestrian safety.

It will also explore options to expand the Thylacine history in the mall.
