As a result of the successful trial, the City of Launceston council is looking to introduce more greenery into the mall.
The planter box was installed at the Charles Street end of the mall just before Christmas, City of Launceston mayor Albert van Zetten said.
"These new hexagonal planters were designed specifically to butt against the existing seating and council staff have been monitoring the installation over the past two months to ensure the in-built watering system was fully functional," he said.
"The remaining planter boxes are expected to be completed and installed by the end of March."

It is understood more than 10 planter boxes will be installed.
A new clock is also set to be reinstalled in the mall, but a final decision on its location is yet to be made.
Meanwhile, final scoping works for the new arbour system is closed to being completed. The system is set to be hung from the wooden structure in the mall.
A feasibility study for the arbour system confirmed it was achievable.
"Officers are working with suppliers to identify the most suitable plant species for this unique system and we expect a final decision to be made soon," Cr van Zetten said.
This system would be the first of its kind in Tasmania.
The old planter boxes are not in a suitable condition to be reused.
