The Mersey Valley Pony Club in recent days knocked back an offer from the Nationals to provide the club with a donation in return for members handing out how to vote cards on election day.

The Nationals on Tuesday did not answer a question about how many clubs or individuals had accepted similar offers to hand out cards.

"Are the Nationals so desperate that they need to politicise local community groups?" Tasmanian Labor Senator Anne Urquhart said.

"Senator Steve Martin and the Nationals have serious questions to answer.

"How many other community groups have the Nationals approached with these offers?

"These hard working community volunteers should not be put in a situation where they are being baited to support Steve Martin's dirty deal with Pauline Hanson."

Tasmanian Nationals campaign director Christine Ferguson said: "The Nationals have a strong history of assisting regional community organisations, both through government investment and their own funds."

"Unlike the major parties, the Nationals are willing to put their hand in their own pocket to make sure money continues to flow to regional communities."

A spokesperson said: "While Labor was busy obsessing about how to vote cards, Senator Martin was busy securing a $6.5 million commitment for West Coast sport and recreation facilities."

"He trusts voters will be smart enough to choose who their best representative in the next parliament should be."

United Australia Party Senate candidate Kevin Morgan said he would like the practice of handing out how to vote cards at polling booths to be ended.

"Pressure at booths is not democracy," Mr Morgan said.

He said he had seen older voters distressed by pressure at booths.

Mr Morgan would rather the material was sent to homes.
