The former Hatton and Laws building on the corner of Charles and Brisbane streets – most recently home to Priceline Pharmacy – is slated to become a jewellery store, with a development application lodged by Michael Hill in December.
The City of Launceston council received 19 representations related to the works, raising concerns around the potential removal of the building’s street-level facade and stained glass windows.
Speaking to The Examiner last week, Michael Hill chief executive Daniel Bracken assured Launceston residents the company had heard their concerns.

“From our perspective we heard the calling of the community,” Mr Bracken said. “We recognised there was a piece of heritage in some aspects of the store, and we’ve redesigned ... to keep some of those historic aspects.”
“We are being absolutely empathetic to the key features of that building and, if anything, doing our best to restore them.”
The existing stained glass windows, tiles and framing are now to be kept and incorporated into the new design.
Though the company now operates in three countries, Mr Bracken said it began rooted in its community and appreciates chances to engage with new ones.
“That particular store is something I have invested in personally. When I see an opportunity to connect to the community, it’s a great way to keep in touch with our original DNA.”
City of Launceston general manager Michael Stretton said council raised community concerns with the proponent earlier this month and had since been working collaboratively with them to explore other options.
“The proponent has now indicated their willingness to leave the stained glass windows —which are still intact — in place,” Mr Stretton said.
“The DA will not be re-advertised, as the modifications to the original plans can be dealt with within the scope of the existing application.”
Council will consider the development application at its February 7 meeting.
