The former Hatton and Laws building on the corner of Charles and Brisbane streets – most recently home to Priceline Pharmacy – is slated to become a jewellery store, with a development application lodged by Michael Hill in December.
Many of the representations against the proposal were critical of the decision to remove the facade at street level, though emails seen by The Examiner suggest the company have since walked back a portion of the original plans.

The changes proposed in the December application showed the original facade above the awning would be retained, though the street-level frontage would be replaced with new cladding, glazing, automatic doors and finishes.
A large graphic panel and infill panel would be added to the existing window, with two 55-inch television displays to display a rotating set of static images.
The DA is due to be determined at the City of Launceston’s February 7 meeting.
The report and recommendations prepared by the City of Launceston’s town planner will be available to view on council’s website from Friday, February 1.
In the development application, Platinum Planning Solutions town planner James Connolly said the proposal continued to facilitate a high-end retail tenancy within the zoning area, and would provide a high-level of pedestrian activity at ground level.
“In line with the planning scheme objectives, the proposal contributes to the vibrancy, investment and high quality design of the area while balancing the mix of commercial interests,” Mr Connolly said.
