On Thursday, a public meeting will be held to discuss the Deloraine and Districts Recreation Precinct’s feasibility study with the community.
The study was completed in January, with the project’s cost expected to be about $28 million.
Since then, the Community Working Group has continued with the proposal, and has outlined a number of recommendations that are now open for public consultation.
The recommendations include expanding the Deloraine Community Complex to include additional indoor sports courts and other indoor facilities, the possible relocation of the football club, and the provision of pathways to the Deloraine Community Complex from neighbouring schools and the town centre.
Meander Valley mayor Craig Perkins said if the “significant” project progressed, it would require substantial investment and funding support.
“I urge all current and future users of this facility to come along and take a look at what the Community Working Group has recommended and share your views,” he said.
“Your feedback will help shape how this precinct serves the community in the short, medium and long term.”
The precinct was first touted in early 2016 by the community.
The current football ground and squash courts are often affected by flooding and a moving these to Alverstone Drive would reduce the likelihood of this happening, the report said.
Other suggestions in the report, such as moving the netball courts and skate park, would encourage more participation in the sports.
“Many of the existing sporting facilities cannot cater adequately for the substantial growth of women’s sport or junior sports,” the report said.
“To do nothing is not a valid option for the future. The replacement and maintenance costs will climb as the existing assets further deteriorate.”
The public meeting will be held in the Auditorium at the Deloraine Community Complex at 7pm.
A copy of the feasibility study and the working group’s recommendations are available on council’s website.
