Two public meetings were held at the end of May and beginning of June as part of the Deloraine and Districts Recreational Precinct Feasibility Study.
Meander Valley Financial Service’s board director Lindy Norton said the idea came from a group of community members who wanted to put all the town’s sporting facilities in the one area.
“They are currently collating all the information they received and assessing this,” she said.
“They will report back to the working group at the end of June and more information will be publicly available in July.”
The idea came about a few years ago, when a group of community members began discussing recreational grounds and the need for better facilities in the area.
“Opportunities for partnering including the sharing of facilities was high on the agenda,” Ms Norton said. “Forward on to 2016, with much discussion, collaboration, lobbying and a major flood, Meander Valley Council have partnered with Deloraine and Districts Community Bank Branch of Bendigo Bank to fund a feasibility study.”
Ms Norton said the aim of the facility would be to be available to anyone who wants to “get up and get moving”.
“We’ll look at what sporting facilities might move and also community groups that might come up, it’ll just be some public open space, so anyone who wants to walk their dog or go for a fun.”
The proposed new site for the facility is in Alveston Drive.
“The community complex is there, and there is a paddock next to that. But that’s the point of the feasibility study, to see if that is suitable,” Mrs Norton said.
The precinct will be a long-term project, with the board of the Community Bank agreeing to spend $50,000 per year, for five years.
“Obviously that depends on the result of the study, but we’re keen to invest in our local community and we see this precinct as a way of doing that.” Mrs Norton said.
The study is expected to be completed by mid-September.
