Unemployment rate rises across Northern Tasmania

Latest Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force data shows a 3 per cent rise in the north west, and a 2 per cent rise in the north.

Treasurer Michael Ferguson said Tasmania remains in a strong position to weather the economic issues currently being faced.

Labor shadow treasurer Shane Broad said rising unemployment rates in north and north-west Tasmania are adding to cost-of-living pressures outside of the state's capital.

Mr Broad said employment numbers were down in every Tasmanian region, and Tasmanians were spending 13 weeks looking for a job compared to seven weeks nationally.

He said Average Weekly Earnings data also shows that Tasmanians remain the lowest paid workers in the nation, earning $221 less a week than the average Australian.

"With low post-pandemic unemployment rates on the rise in the north of the state, the Liberal Government continues to demonstrate its incompetence by focusing on the wrong priorities," Mr Broad said.

Treasurer Michael Ferguson said recent economic performance indicators show Tasmania is in a strong position to weather forecasted strong economic headwinds, and continue to make strategic investments in cost of living relief, health, and housing for Tasmanians.

"Labor can attempt to cherry pick and catastrophise all it wants, but the reality is however, that since the disastrous days of the Labor-Green Government 54,100 Jobs have been created, and the unemployment rate has dropped by 3.4 per cent from a whopping 7.4 per cent when they left Government," Mr Ferguson said.

"We see statistical changes in regional measures from month to month however the key measure is the total result which shows that the unemployment rate is at a historic low," he said.

"Our plan for Tasmania is seeing our State break records as we continue to strengthen our local businesses, employ Tasmanians, and deliver on our plan to secure Tasmania's future."
