Health minister Jeremy Rockliff reported the death in aged care on Tuesday morning.
"Sadly, I can confirm that a man in his late 80s, who was in a residential aged care facility in the state's North has died," Mr Rockliff said.
"I would like to pass on my sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the man who has sadly passed away."
Mr Rockliff said Tasmania recorded 2324 new cases overnight, with more than 11 400 Tasmanians formally testing positive.
This includes 2107 in the North-West, 2920 in the North with the remaining 5984 cases in the South.
Mr Rockliff said 72 853 people have now formally recovered in Tasmania.
"There are 22 people in hospital with COVID and of these, five are being treated specifically for COVID," he said.
"There is currently no one being cared for in the ICU."
Up to 65 per cent of Tasmanians have received a booster vaccine dose.
Mr Rockliff encouraged anyone who is eligible to get the booster to do so now.
"We want to see even more people turn up and boost their protection against COVID, particularly before we head into the winter season," he said.
"Importantly over 80 per cent of our over 50 population have now been boosted."
