Launceston's great winter cake battle Cakealicious has awarded a dual first prize to two competing cafes in the city's winter cake competition.

The honor of serving the most delicious cake in town will be shared by VegOut on George St and Cake O'Clock in the Quadrant Mall who received the same number of votes.
Evidently, the public was split between VegOut's cookies and cream cake and Cake O'Clock's earl grey chocolate sponge.

Cake O'Clock co-owner Owen Koh said he was surprised when he had won having only started the business five months ago.
Originally from Malaysia, Mr Koh said he entered the competition to promote the new business but never expected his unique style of cake would win.
"Australians like very rich, dense and sweet cakes, but our cake is very light and airy and spongy with much less sugar," he said.
"We focus less on sweetness and more on creating a balanced flavour, using fruit, tea and nuts in the cakes."

He said the competition has been great for his business, seeing a significant rise in customers throughout the judging period.
For VegOut co-owner Lisa Chandler the win saw the business maintain a strong foothold as one of the city's most popular cafes.
"Winning Toastalicious last year and Cakealicious this year is amazing for a small family run business like ours", she said. "We're thankful for such strong community support."

Cityprom's executive officer Amanda McEvoy said many businesses had reported an uptake in the winter trade bolstered by increased traffic throughout the city - with cafes one of the main beneficiaries.
Mr Kow said seeing people enjoy a cake he's been baking since opening the cafe was all he needed.
