AFL: Carlton, Fremantle game won't be played in Tasmania

The Dockers, who will play the Hawks at UTAS Stadium on July 10, had voiced a desire to play Saturday's game in Tasmania to ensure Carlton had to travel outside its home state.

The match will instead be played at GMHBA Stadium in Victoria.

Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein ruled out hosting the game on Wednesday afternoon as a precaution against coronavirus.

"As a result of the current national risk the game will not go ahead in Tasmania," Mr Gutwein said.

"I know that will disappoint many people - especially Carlton supporters, who I'm sure there are many of in the state.

"We've just advised the AFL of that decision. We don't expect that this will have any further implications for the roster moving forward."

The Hawthorn-Essendon blockbuster was moved to Launceston two rounds ago, with a 14,834-strong crowd filling out a 75 per cent capacity UTAS Stadium.

The ground would have been set to host three AFL matches in four weeks if Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick, who spearheaded a report into Tasmanian football in 2016, had his way.

"Personally, I like the potential to go down to Tasmania," Garlick told SEN on Wednesday.

"We're playing there the following weekend.

"It might sound silly but it's something that sits uncomfortably with me is the Blues getting out of their beds and driving to the MCG or Marvel when it's our home game."
