The annual awards are coordinated by the Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing and Energy Council in conjunction with the AusIMM Women in Mining Network Tasmania to create awareness of the inspirational women working in resources, mining and manufacturing and encourage other women to pursue careers in these Tasmanian industries.
"A career in this industry provides one of the best pathways to financial security for women, who in many cases have been financially disrupted by COVID and other factors. Raising the awareness amongst the community about the place women are equally capable of achieving in this industry is vital for our longevity" he said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Ted Bradshaw, chairman of AusIMM WIMnet, remarked on the important role of the awards in inspiring women to pursue careers in non-traditional sectors.
"These awards provide fantastic recognition for the increasing numbers of women working across a wide variety of roles from the shop floor to senior management" he said
Four women from Bell Bay Aluminium in the state's north were recognised at the annual awards.
Aleesa Shepherd, Kylie Sherriff, Amby Ramasubramanian and Hayley Williams were all recognised for their work at Bell Bay Aluminium.
Winner of the Exceptional Woman in Tasmanian Resources Award, Aleesa Shepherd said it was important to encourage diversity.
"Speaking on behalf of my colleagues, Kylie and Amby, the three of us are absolutely and unexpectedly delighted to be winners of these awards. While the smelter is still a male-dominated workplace, it's incredibly important to us to make sure we all play a part in creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone-no matter gender, culture, or otherwise," she said.
"It's incumbent on us to be part of a positive environment that helps to shift the dial and biases and foster a safe space for others who might be considering a role at the smelter or in the resources industry."
The trio will automatically progress to the national awards in Canberra on September 1.
