North Launceston's Jay Foon leaps up State League player of year standings

Asked to take on a new role for a transitioning Bombers team missing the likes of Taylor Whitford and Josh Ponting, the former defender has played midfield every game this season and regularly hit the 30-possession mark.

"Jay hasn't played on ball since his junior days I don't reckon," Cox-Goodyer said.

"Ever since he's been at the senior club he's been a defender so for him to have good form at the moment is really positive but give him another 10 weeks playing on ball and hopefully you'll see something pretty special.

"He's leading really well as the captain which is good as well."

Foon was adjudged best on ground in the Bombers' surprise 15-point derby win over reigning premier Launceston on Friday in a more attacking role which has seen him kick two goals in each of his past three games.

"He's obviously a dangerous player, but we weren't expecting him to be a dangerous player going forward but he's proven he can do that," Cox-Goodyer said.

"It's great considering the versatility that we've got in him and Tom Donnelly and Jack Avent and these guys who can play anywhere on the ground, it just gives us another avenue to goal."

Foon's three votes made him the big mover in the player of the year standings, breaking clear of Launceston namesake Jay Blackberry much as he did at UTAS Stadium on Friday night.

Foon is now just two votes behind the Blues' runaway leader Jake Hinds.

Jake Rushton and Brendan Taylor picked up the minor votes from the match.

Big wins to the Tigers and Clarence saw clean sweeps in the voting with Tom Wright and Zac Buechner judged best on ground.
