The council decided to sell the building during the closed section of its March meeting, before it released its decision publicly.
The decision came after the council commissioned a report from consultancy firm Watershed Solutions to identify the possible future usage and opportunities for the building.

However, the council noted it intended to sell the building back in October as mayor Mary Knowles said it could not keep up with the cost of maintaining older buildings.
The building is used by the Campbell Town Museum and Visitor Information Centre and for monthly markets.
