Acting Inspector Mel Death said police received a number of calls from members of the public just after 8.45pm with concerns about the driving behaviour of a silver BMW X5 travelling north on the Midland Highway.
Police were on their way when they received reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle on the highway north of Epping Forest, just before 9pm.
Acting Inspector Death said initial investigations showed the driver of the BMW - a 43-year-old South Launceston man - had parked on the left-hand side of the highway and got out of the car.
"It appears that a male person has been in the middle of the roadway and has been struck by a motor vehicle travelling north out of Epping Forest towards Launceston," she said.
"Early indications from our investigation, we believe that the driver of the BMW is the deceased male.
"At this stage, the matter is being investigated and the report is being prepared for the coroner."
