Dyer was recognised as one of Tasmania's best-known artists.
With a career spanning more than 50 years, his artwork was displayed at exhibitions across the world, including collections at the University of Tasmania, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, and MONA.
Dyer was the second Tasmanian in history to win the Archibald Prize in 2003, with a portrait of fellow Tasmanian Richard Flanagan.
