A South32 spokesman said the options under assessment still included divestment, care and maintenance, or closure.
It is understood divestment and sale to a potential buyer is the preferred option.

The company in March placed its South African manganese smelter Metalloys in temporary care and maintenance because of the national lockdown in the country associated with coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Rio Tinto announced on Thursday it would close its New Zealand aluminium smelter next year.
The smelter is one of four in its Pacific Aluminium unit which includes the smelter at Bell Bay.
The company continues to negotiate over energy costs to operate the smelter.
