A Launceston police officer has been charged with manslaughter in relation to a crash that left a pedestrian dead in Launceston's CBD.

The 39-year-old constable was charged on Monday, nearly four months after the incident.
Tasmania Police said the officer had been stood down and would appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on July 8.

The officer also faces a charge of causing grievous bodily harm as well as driving offences.
It has been alleged a police car drove through an intersection about 8.30pm on January 6 and collided with another vehicle. The police car then allegedly hit and killed a nearby pedestrian, and left another in a critical condition.
The police vehicle was allegedly attending an urgent incident and had activated emergency lights and sirens.

The deceased was a man in his 40s from the Hunter Valley; the injured pedestrian was his wife.
