Craig Briggs tried to beat the crowds with his grandsons by travelling, from Scottsdale and Bridport, and starting their shopping at 8.30am.
Kobie Hughes was on the hunt for a Star Wars lightsaber and his younger brother Jax wanted a nerf gun, a monster truck and teddies.
The early risers who knew exactly what they wanted were in and out early on but the Brisbane Street Mall and the CBD was swarming with shoppers by 11am.
At 11.15am the line to pay in Cotton On had already stretched to about 20 metres long.

Tasmanian Small Business Council executive officer Robert Mallett said the state's retailers should be confident for the last trading days of the year.
"Indications are that it has been a successful year in retail and business in general throughout the state," he said.
"This has probably been brought about by a vibrant state economy combined with some skillful and successful traders, good tourism numbers, consistent employment numbers and a late rush of pleasant weather."
