Mr Gaetani said the appeal's yearly donation meant Vinnies could assist more families and individuals in need each year.
This year the society will donate more than 1000 hampers to people across the state for Christmas, in addition to 40 donated hampers from Launceston Rotary Club to distribute locally.
More than 200 are being distributed in Launceston, 240 in Devonport, 220 in Burnie and the West Coast region and 600 in and around Hobart.
Mr Gaetani said Tasmanians by their very nature were generous people.
"Tasmanians are increasingly looking to give to those in greater need, especially at Christmas time, which is a good thing because the demand on the St. Vincent de Paul Society is growing year-on-year," he said.
"There is a lot of social as well as financial pressure on families at Christmas time, especially if you are on a low income, on benefits, or living in poverty.
"Christmas is associated with giving gifts and celebrating with friends and family, so the St. Vincent de Paul Society reaches out to make this possible for as many underprivileged families and people as possible."

Research company McCrindle found the Christmas period was the most popular time for Australian charitable donations and Tasmania has the highest number of charities per capita in the nation.
He said every donation counted and could help the underprivileged at Christmas with a gift that kept on giving.
"Basically, the society steps in - with no judgement - and say "who needs our help?"," Mr Gaetani said.
"When all hope seems lost for some, the local community, through the society, offers a hand up that says we care about everyone in our community.
"It is a selfless act of kindness that can sometimes be all that is needed to give those in need the encouragement to carry on."
For the 111th appeal The Examiner has set a target to raise $90,000 to help four Launceston charities.
The appeal has raised $60,343 so far.
Every dollar raised will go towards Launceston City Mission, The Salvation Army, The Benevolent Society and St Vincent De Paul.
