The fire has burned through 250 hectares and is being pushed by strong westerly winds towards the town.
A watch and act warning has been current for most of Sunday with five aircrafts assisting.
TFS northern regional fire controller Ian Bounds said the town could come under ember attack on Sunday afternoon.
He said the fire had been too intense to attack directly, so crews were putting in containment lines and back burning.
Monitoring will continue, but winds are making it "quite challenging", Mr Bounds said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
An evacuation centre has been identified, but has not yet been opened.
TFS has been in communication with residents and say they are comfortable at this time.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is expected to be investigated on Monday. However, the TFS have not ruled out foul play.
On Sunday afternoon a 20-year-old Mayfield man was taken into custody over allegations the fire was deliberately lit.
A 45-hectare fire at Lefroy has also been issued with a watch and act alert, with an uncontrolled bushfire at Bridport Road, between Back Creek Road and Lefroy Road.
This fire may put the area at a high risk and be difficult to control under current conditions.
What to do:
- If your home is well prepared and actively defended, it should provide shelter.
- If you are going to leave, make sure you have a clear path to a safer place.
- If your family has made a bushfire survival plan, use it now.
- If you don't live near Bridport Rd between Back Creek Rd and Lefroy Rd, stay away. The roads could be very dangerous.
