City of Launceston Council adopted its new sustainability strategy at its recent council meeting, which aims at ensuring the organisation becomes more sustainable into the future.
The strategy includes the council's previous position on climate change and describes guiding principles for the way forward, including the steps the council will take towards action planning, in partnership with the community.

Further consultation is planned for later this year as part of the action planning process for priority actions, both for the council and for the community to develop and participate in.
The Cities Power Partnership is a free program run by the Climate Council.
This action will provide the council with support to move towards improved carbon management and renewable energy plans. The strategy acknowledges the term "sustainability" is a broad one, but outlined some guiding principles.
The council aims to collect information and review it on an ongoing basis and use data to evaluate its impact on greenhouse gases.

It will also look at environmental indicators such as air and water quality, native vegetation mapping and urban canopy management to track the impact of council decisions and actions.
A council working group will be created and community collaboration.
The motion passed unanimously, with councillor Andrea Dawkins saying the council embraced the challenge and is leading action.
"This paper will allow us to move to carbon neutrality, 100 per cent renewables, and ongoing planning and maintaining the health, safety and welfare of our community."
