Targa champion Jason White picks favourite stages

But there's two stretches seven-time Targa winner and 2019 favourite, Jason White, is particularly looking forward to - both in the region of his home town, Devonport.

"There aren't too many that I don't look forward to, but I love a bit of Paloona [between Devonport and Ulverstone]," he said.

"Cethana [behind Mt Ronald] is a cracking stage too, it's really hard on the car - it was really hard on our tires last year - but it's one of those stages that is that much fun to drive through.

"It'd seem like a bit of a sacrilege if you were out there in a car like we've got and you had the road to yourself and you knew no one was coming the other way and you didn't enjoy yourself.

"It's, you know, 'jeez that was fun', at the expense of a bit of tyre."

He'll be hitting the road in the car he's been driving for three years: a 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme, with an 8.4 litre V10 engine, just under 700 horsepower, and 365 tyres (the widest of any production car, White believes).

It's a car he's "grown to love", after the Lamborghini the Whites originally competed with was banned through a Targa rule change.

"When I first jumped in it, being left-hand drive and sitting so much further back that anything I'd driven before, it was really unfamiliar - especially learning to change gears with the right hand.

"But now when I jump in it, it's like ... an old friend that you're going to visit."

Targa runs across Tasmania April 29 - May 4.
