Federal Families and Social Services Minister Paul Fletcher made the announcement on Wednesday, March 13, at City Mission's Frederick Street office.
"This is for providing food and other essentials to people who really need help very quickly," Mr Fletcher said.
"If somebody comes in here, and they're in a difficult situation - if a mother doesn't have dinner for her kids that night - then emergency relief is designed to provide that via Launceston City Mission, through their terrific volunteers, great staff, and their standing and reputation."
City Mission chief executive Stephen Brown said the funding would enable them to continue assisting members of the community when they were in their "deepest need".
