Employment Plus hosts job fair to help seekers get comfortable with looking for employment

Job seekers throughout the day were able to briefly meet with employers of various areas of business to learn about how they go about applying for and getting employment.

Employment Plus recruiter Narissa McElwee said the day was about giving job seekers a glimpse at how they can work with employers to get a job.

"We're all about about helping job seekers find sustainable and meaningful employment so one of the ways of being able to do that is getting them in front of employers," Ms McElwee said.

"Letting them have a chance to tell our job seekers what their business is about."

About 13 employers and more than 80 job seekers took part in the day. 

Aspiring employees were moved around to different stations to talk to employers about what kind of work they can get and how they can get it.

Employment Plus said data from the third quarter of 2018 showed Launceston's unemployment rate of 6.82 per cent to be notably higher to the national average of 5.3 per cent.

Regional manager at Employment Plus Tanya Zaadstra said the day was about easing job seekers into the job application and interview process.

"[It's about] Giving job seekers experience in talking to employers in a very non-threatening environment," Ms Zaadstra said.

"Getting them to understand what's required to actually meet employer's needs and an opportunity for employers to help job seekers directly.

"This is an opportunity to do the whole thing and bring it all together."

Ms McElwee said often job seekers come to Employment Plus upset that they can't get work they are after and the job fair helped in growing their interview skills.

"It's all about seeing people come in and seeing the transformation," she said.

Employment Plus Launceston site manager Alison Armstrong said the day helped remove an unfortunate stigma that a small city like Launceston doesn't have any work

"Job seekers have opened their eyes, there is employment out there," she said.
