Released on Sunday, the report indicated 90 per cent of Tasmanians said they would be likely to help during natural disasters and emergencies in Australia in the next two years, an increase of 3 per cent from the national average.
The state also had the largest percentage of people who said they would help feed the homeless, assist with the welfare of children and young people, and who believed volunteering should start at an individual level.
More than 2000 people took part in the online survey, including Red Cross customers and financial donors.
Tasmanian Red Cross volunteer Wendy England knows what it means to give back to her community, having been a part of the organisation for the past four years.
Her role within the telecross service consists of making daily phone calls to elderly people in the area to make sure they are alright.
She said she was “surprised” by the survey.
“When it comes to volunteering, it’s more about what sort of person you are, rather than where you are from,” she said.
“There are going to be self-centred people in every region mixed in with others who are more likely to help out.
“It comes down to the ability to be able to look outside yourself and see other people in need.”
According to the report, 65 per cent of Australians agree with the statement: I would like to do more to help others in need.
At the same time, 55 per cent disagree with the statement: Humanitarian issues are too far removed from me and my day to day life.
Australian Red Cross chief executive Judy Slatyer said while she was “in awe” of the country’s volunteers, there was always a need for more assistance in the winter months.
“About 20,000 Red Cross volunteers are helping out every day, whether it providing a helpful ear in a bushfire, or connecting people who care with people who feel left out,” she said.
“We can all do more to look out for our neighbours and check in on lonely older people, who could do with a helping hand.”
