The federal government will provide $1.58 million towards the Greater Launceston Transformation Project for the region.
With the collation of data, the project will facilitate the delivery of a transformational 3D city modelling capability for the city and suburbs.
It will incorporate mobility data from mobile phone towers as well as data from key city infrastructure, such as emergency responses, road safety, energy supply, public transport and land use.
Liberal senator for Tasmania, David Bushby, welcomed the project, which is one of 52 successful ones in the federal government’s inaugural Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.
“Falling under the umbrella of the Launceston City Deal, the project is aimed at assisting the region to be best placed to leverage future investment opportunities,” Senator Bushby said.
“This project is a testament to what can be achieved when all three tiers of government and the private sector collaborate.”
Launceston Chamber of Commerce chief executive Neil Grose said the funding would be an “excellent addition to the City Deal”.
“The vision and leadership shown by all involved in this project is to be congratulated, providing funds to allow technology to develop powerful new insights into how people currently see our city and the greater Launceston area,” he said.
“Not only will the GLTP provide valuable resources for Launceston as it enters a positive new stage, it will allow some of the exciting new development opportunities in our city to be modelled and better understood before they proceed.”
