The bid for the 24-hour toilets came after the Southern Launceston Community Development committee started a petition which gained more than 1180 signatures.
Committee member David Jones said it was a commendable project.
“It’s something the community really needs, because Kings Meadows has developed quite a bit since the toilets [in Meadow Mews] were built,” he said.
The development also includes a walkway over the Kings Meadows Rivulet.
The council received a $50,000 Community Infrastructure Grant from the state government for the $90,000 project.
Mayor Albert Van Zetten said the project would be started by the year’s end and was expected to be completed in eight weeks.
“People won’t have to hold on for that long,” Alderman Van Zetton joked.
"This is the perfect example of community engagement. The people spoke and the council listened, and I commend all those involved, particularly the state government for their generous funding announcement."
The toilets will be built on council-owned land.
