The state government announced a $60 million loans program in September aiming to give Northern councils the chance to fast-track infrastructure projects. 

Northern Midlands Council has so far been successful in obtaining $5 million under the program, bringing forward upgrades to eight projects including the Campbell Town multipurpose complex, Longford Football Ground and the Longford Community Centre.

Northern Midlands mayor David Downie said the council had made the submission for a further $1 million just before applications closed on March 31.

“We've received notification that we've been successful with all the other projects so we're only waiting on this one from Campbell Town,” Cr Downie said. 

“So now the pressure is on the council to deliver those projects as quickly as possible so the communities can reap the benefits.”

The $2.1 million Campbell Town urban design and traffic management strategy focuses on improvements to parking and pedestrian movement and includes upgrades to playground and toilet facilities.

Cr Downie said with Campbell Town’s main street set to be upgraded by the Department of State Growth in the near future, it made sense to overhaul the streetscape at the same time. 

“We thought that if the centre of the road is going to be resealed then we'd like to do up the council part of the infrastructure in Campbell Town.

“So we've applied for some more of that stimulus funding to be able to expedite that project as quickly as we can and keep in line with state government's reseal program.”

Cr Downie said the council was expecting to receive a response to its application in the near future.

“I'd imagine we'd hear fairly shortly but… there's still a few ducks to be lined up.

“But it's really good news for the economy and the town of Campbell Town because council is putting a lot of effort into doing the pavilion, upgrading the toilets in Valentine’s Park and now the streetscape.”
