Parts of a skull and other bones were located on a property near the East Tamar Highway.
Tasmania Police said the results of DNA testing had not come back, but detectives were in contact with the region’s Procter family.
Police believe the remains belong to Newnham man Wilfred Pearson Procter, who went missing in 1971.
He was last seen wandering the streets of Newnham.
Mr Procter’s family identified a watch found with the remains in September.
