The council yesterday voted to provide funding for an events schedule that did not include the annual event.
The George Town Christmas parade, carols by candlelight, Australia Day award ceremony and family fun day and volunteers' acknowledgment function were included in the events calendar for 2014-15.
The report from community services manager Anne Cameron said issues raised in relation to George Town on Show included a lack of volunteers, several consecutive years of inclement weather, insufficient identification of broad-based community outcomes and rising costs of event management.
Deputy Mayor Bridget Archer amended the original motion to invite "interested parties" to meet the council to further discuss the events program.
"I think when it comes down to it we did destroy George Town on Show - not intentionally, but it became an incredibly costly exercise," she said.
She said there was scope for community groups to organise a similar festival.
