Shaun Keverall Kaye has pleaded not guilty to causing Timothy John Harris grevious bodily harm in Ravenswood on July 12, 2012.
The jury of five women and seven men were sworn in this morning.
The trial is expected to run for two days.
Crown prosecutor John Ransom said Mr Harris along with a number of police officers would be called as witnesses.
Mr Kaye is being represented by defence counsel James Oxley of the Legal Aid Commisssion of Tasmania.
