I did not have any early knowledge of the idea until very late in the proceedings - the idea came from much more artistic and younger thinking minds than mine.
However, I think back to the century of our history when the mighty Malua was all but forgotten, even in the town of his birth and it was so hard to raise the money and for so many of us to build his recognition.
I feel so pleased that many keep the horse and his amazing story in their current thinking.
Perhaps we shouldn't have covered him up for the week of the craft fair, but now I think we realise that Malua really means a great deal to our district and we can all feel very proud that the most versatile horse ever, in Australian racing, was bred here at Calstock in Deloraine, Tasmania.
It shows the potential of our state to produce top horses.
I was told, and I met, numbers who had come to Deloraine over the week to view the Malua Memorial and I sincerely apologise to those who were inconvenienced.
However, in retrospect it was only for a week and it taught many of us the lesson of how valued the story and memorial is to our district.
My thanks to those who have raised the issue, either way, because it taught us all an important lesson and let us build on it, to further spread the wonderful story of Malua and his memorial.
- GEOFF WOODS, Malua Memorial Committee chairman.
