Premier Jeremy Rockliff called the March 23 election saying he was going for stability.
It followed Liberal backbenchers John Tucker and Lara Alexander quitting the party to become independents.
That pushed the Liberals down from a bare majority of 13 in the old parliament to 11, leaving them two short of a majority.
Relations between the Liberals and their former colleagues deteriorated, leading to increased frustration on Mr Rockliff's part and his eventual pulling of the election trigger.
Now, in an expanded 35-member House of Assembly, the Liberals will have 14 MHAs, leaving them four short of a majority and needing cooperation from at least four non-Liberal MPs.
Early on, that looks like being the trio of new Jacqui Lambie Network MPs plus at least one independent.
One of the three independents - Braddon newcomer Craig Garland - has flagged he is happy to work with anybody to get good outcomes.
He said he was not going to parliament to make enemies.
How long it holds together is a big question.
Likely new Labor leader Dean Winter was quick to pull out the "Captain Chaos" tag for Mr Rockliff on April 6, the day the last seats were decided.
Labor, which also campaigned for majority government, managed just 10 seats.
Mr Rockliff warned claimed repeatedly during the campaign that a Labor-led minority government would be a "coalition of chaos".
The JLN and the Greens each gained three seats, with the Greens expanding to five.
Former leader Cassy O'Connor is targeting the Legislative Council seat of Hobart.
She would be the state's first Greens MLC if elected in May.
