Implementation of the state government's new Draft Salmon Industry Plan will support the industry's sustainable growth and improve its transparency, Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Jo Palmer, said on Wednesday.

Released on Wednesday, the draft plan proposes an expansion of the industry's environmental regulatory framework.
It is is open for consultation, and the public have until midnight on January 20 next year to make submissions.
"The final plan will be an enduring long-term plan that will provide strategic direction and certainty for industry and community," Ms Palmer said.
The four key priority outcomes of the plan were a sustainable salmon industry, healthy ecosystems, prosperous local communities, and contemporary governance - including industry transparency.
The draft plan also acknowledged that the state's marine environments are "intrinsically valuable".
Under the draft plan, the existing environmental regulatory frameworks would be expanded to provide an "outcomes-based approach to regulation".
This expanded framework would be based on "international best practice", setting out performance requirements for finfish farms.
Chief executive officer of the Tasmanian Salmon-growers' Association, Sue Grau, said the draft plan "validates where our industry is headed".
"The government's plan acknowledges the industry's importance to the state, and we look forward to engaging in the consultation process," she said.
But Janie Finlay, opposition spokesperson for Primary Industries and Water, said the draft plan was a "missed opportunity".
"The plan does little to recognise and realise the full potential of Tasmania's oceans and our potential opportunity to sustainably feed Australia and the world," she said.
"It could have delivered Tasmanians an ambitious way forward and provided an invitation to positively participate in our ocean economy.," she said.
"Instead, the government has placed its priority on regulation rather than having an eye to the future and identifying pathways to support new innovations that showcase our skills and talents and build trust and confidence."
