Significant delays have been experienced over several days by commuters along the Cam River Bridge at Somerset, following recent flood damage.
Labor in Question Time on Tuesday asked the government to commit to the building of a second bridge as the party had itself last year.
Mr Rockliff said the government would seek advice on a second crossing.
"As a government, we will and are doing everything possible and we'll spare no expense to ensure that the Cam River Bridge is reopened as soon and as safely as we can," he said.
"This damage really highlights of course why we need the new Cam River Bridge, which is designed to be higher, stronger and wider to ensure the situation does not occur."
Mr Rockliff said the frustration of commuters recently had been acknowledged.
"The last 36 hours demonstrates that we need to be very proactively looking at a second crossing," he said.
