The Tasmanian AFL Taskforce's business case promotes an even split of matches between Hobart and Launceston but plans for a $750 million stadium in the South have raised concern.

The Chamber's chief executive William Cassidy advises the Chamber is yet to determine their position on an AFL team in Tasmania but know the North of the state must be protected.

"We're still considering what a Tasmanian AFL team will mean for the state, but our immediate position is that Launceston has benefited greatly from Hawthorn playing home games at UTAS Stadium and that the AFL benefit to the North must be protected as a minimum," he said.

"We also note the cost of the proposed Stadium Tasmania is now being reported at $1 billion. With the current construction crunch and supply chain concerns in Tasmania, we are concerned this amount will dramatically increase."

Cassidy has joined the likes of City of Launceston Mayor Albert Van Zetten and his predecessor Ivan Dean in voicing their concern.

Van Zetten has stated his council are seeking a Memorandum of Understanding with the state government in regards to matches played in the North, while Dean said a new stadium would "spell the end of AFL football in Launceston as we know it".

Cassidy's comments come following the AFL's 18 club presidents meeting on Tuesday, with the Tasmanian AFL bid reportedly discussed.

It's understood several club presidents have reservations about the bid, with the likes of Gold Coast's Tony Cochrane speaking openly against it in the past.
