The Australian Democrats have announced they will run two Tasmanian senate candidates in the next federal election as they move to build their base in the state.

National president Lyn Allison said the party wanted to set up two new branches in Tasmania, one in the North and one in the South, to grow its membership.
The decision is part of a nationwide push from the party to establish branches in regional and rural areas.

"The Tasmanian people are aware of the Democrats and remember their history," Ms Allison said.
"I think there is a lot of disgruntlement there with the major parties so we think we will do okay there."
Norm Sanders served for two years in Tasmania's House of Assembly for the Democrats from 1980.

He went on to be elected to the Senate from 1985 until his retirement in 1990.
Mr Sanders was replaced by Robert Bell who served for six years until his defeat in the 1996 federal election.
The party was established in 1977 and held the balance of power twice in the Senate from 1980 until 2004.
The party was deregistered in 2015, but regained federal registration in 2019.
