Despite the push for the state's own AFL team, The Examiner heard from families who were loyal in their allegiance.
Georgia Chettle, aged 9, Max Chettle, aged 11, and father Mark Chettle travelled from Wynyard for the game.
Despite Georgia supporting both Sydney and Hawthorn, the family were cheering on their Hawks.
"We come to every game in Tasmania," said Max.
"I'm pretty happy supporting Hawthorn, because whatever team we get here they won't be too good at the start."
Father Max had been a mad Hawthorn supporter for years.
"Nearly 40 years ... I don't think I'd change," he said.
Russell Venn, wife Michaela and daughter Lavinia travelled from Hobart to attend the game.
Russell, originally from Western Australia, remained a Fremantle fan - with the family travelling for Lavinia's first ever AFL game.
"They've never played in Hobart yet so I'm waiting for that to happen, I've seen them play here before but not in Hobart," he said.
"We thought we'd jump on board and come up and see them play in Launnie.
"I would get on board a Tassie team as well, I hope that happens, it's one that I've been watching with interest, and I would have a soft spot for a new Tassie team but I bleed purple so to speak, so I can't not support Fremantle."
Father-daughter duo Paul and Rohanee Hancock travelled from Boat Harbour, saying they'd like to see more AFL action on the coast, but were happy to drive the distance to see their Hawks play.
"I'm 44 years old, they played really great football in the 80s, and there were a couple Tassie players back then so it went from then," Paul said on his support for Hawthorn.
"I'd support [a Tasmanian AFL team] but I wouldn't be a member as such.
"I'd come to games more so on the coast than if it was here, depends who they play though."
