The Police Association of Tasmania released its list of election priorities on Tuesday with the recruitment of additional officers first and foremost.
The association wants the staff increase to include 16 additional Criminal Investigation Branch investigators with seven of these to be based in the North and four in the North-West.
IN OTHER NEWS:
It wants four digital evidence forensic staff, eight surveillance team members in the North, 13 cybercrime investigators, and 12 police prosecutors.
The union wants three additional crash investigation service investigators with one stationed in each region.
PAT president Colin Riley said detectives had to deal with more complex matters than ever before and there were increased expectations and accountability measures placed on them.
He said this resulted in investigations being more demanding than ever.
"Of these 70 additional police, 33 are in the North, to deal with the historically higher levels of crime in Launceston," Mr Riley said.
"As at February 2021, there are 107 of 1364 officers on open workers compensation claims, up from 85 in October 2020.
"That is 7.8 per cent of the workforce."
Tasmania has seven 24-hour police stations.
Mr Riley said the number of officers on leave equated to an additional 24-hour station in terms of the shifted workload and the extra duties associated with COVID-19 equated to a ninth 24-hour police station.
"All this is drawn from current numbers with no diminishing of the expectations from the community or taskings our people undertake," he said.
"These election commitments will ensure the enhanced protection of Tasmanians and aid to reduce the numbers of our people damaged and the impacts on their families."
The police union wants the next government to review the Police Service Act and consider the introduction of reviewable processes for all disciplinary matters, promotions and transfers.
PAT has also requested upgrades be made to the St Helens police station and the Bridgewater police station.
