Eddie Palu's boat Surprise had been hit by a wave while he was pulling cray pots about 100km south of Strahan, rescued after making it to shore near Low Rocky Point.

He escaped the submerged wheelhouse of the boat, making it onto a life raft, with conditions challenging.

He was picked up by the police rescue helicopter, flown to Strahan and taken to the Queenstown Hospital.

Mr Palu described the ordeal as "emotionally shattering".

Meanwhile, it was Easter weekend, with Northern Tasmanian church services reporting good attendance at Good Friday services the day prior.
