Tasmanian Premier supportive of election candidate despite firearm storage allegations

Tasmania Police will soon issue a summons for Mr Brooks to appear in court for failing to adequately store ammunition as required by the state's Firearms Act.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Brooks said no firearms were involved in the allegations that he would vigorously defend himself against.

Mr Gutwein on Friday morning said he was first made aware of the matter a week ago.

"But at that stage, the matter of whether he would be summonsed or not wasn't clear," he said.

"This needs to take its course through the courts.

"At the end of the day, Mr Brooks will be vigorously defending this."

Mr Brooks was elected to Parliament in 2010 and later served as Resources Minister.

He was relegated to the backbench after he misled Parliament during an estimates hearing in relation to usage of a private email account linked to his business Maintenance System Solutions.

The use of the email account was investigated by the state's Integrity Commission and he was cleared of breaching the ministerial code of conduct.

The report, however, stated Mr Brooks had failed to accurately inform former premier Will Hodgman about his association with MSS while a minister.
