NBL: Scott Roth talks Magic, Bird and NBA uniforms

What is your favourite American fast-food chain that isn't in Australia?

Roth: I would say California Pizza Kitchen, that's one of my favourites.

Maybe the Cheesecake Factory as well ...I like In-and-Out as well.

You've played/coached a lot of basketball teams in your time, which one has your favourite uniform?

R: When I played, the Spurs [San Antonio] with the black and silver spur on it is a cool NBA logo. I enjoyed the Jazz [Utah] uniform also.

I've played for those two teams and they have been nice but I see a lot of really nice uniforms come out this year.

Nowadays, the uniforms are really nice but back when I played, you thought they were nice with the short-shorts and everything.

How about the JackJumpers' uniform?

R: I actually think the logo's fantastic. When I speak to everyone back home [in America], they all think it's a Marvel character of some sort.

Then when I tell them it can actually kill you they get even more excited about the fact it's only an ant but it's that dangerous.

What's your favourite sport other than basketball?

R: I would say golf ...I just like that it's a mental game.

It's a game where if you play well, you get paid. If you don't play well, you don't get paid.

It's very much a game of mental toughness ... but it's one of those games that you get paid well if you play well - you don't get guaranteed money.

If I'm in the NBA and I play horrible all year, I still get paid ... in golf if you play terrible, you're not on the tour anymore.

Who's your favourite NBA player, past or present?

R: I was very fortunate in Utah to live with Karl Malone for my time I was there.

I got to play with John Stockton and play against Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Magic Johnson.

Currently, the players I've been with like Nowitzki [Dirk], Steve Nash, Shane Battier, Steph Curry more recently.

They're just great basketball players, obviously hall of fame players but also just great people and that's what I'd love to have here with us is to have good basketball players but also high-level guys that you'd want to bring over for dinner.

There's no ego, they're selfless - those are characteristics I really like.

If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

R: I'd go home to see my wife and daughter. This is going to be the longest we've ever been separated because I wasn't expecting to get this job and was planning on going home.

It might be almost a year until I can see my wife again which will be quite something. But if I could go somewhere, it would be home to see them.
