Trout fishing Tasmania: Cumbungi eradicated from Four Springs Lake

Noticed in 2017, this invasive weed was spreading rapidly until it was poisoned and slashed. Anyone who spots the weed should report it to the service.

Up top, Lake Sorell is now open and like neighbouring Lake Crescent, its level rose 10cm last week.

The lower Meander River has recently been running high as has the Lake River, a major tributary of the Macquarie River. When filled, check for trout in the Lake River sidewaters, between the Macquarie and hills fronting the Western Tiers.

Meanwhile, river trout will soon be looking for grasshoppers, with feeding usually peaking from late summer. Especially where grasshoppers are thick and wind is blowing offshore, prospecting persistently enough with a hopper or floating copy might well be rewarded.

Fly-fishers might well check Brumbys Creek and linked rivers downstream which have again been benefiting from refreshing surges of Great Lake water this summer. Probably because of these cooler flows, mayflies here seem to show in fewer numbers at any one time but are about for longer.

Kingfish have been reported at the mouth of the Tamar estuary. They have sometimes been cruising in schools below other fish so letting lures sink well down and then retrieving them faster than usual can be effective.
