A quarry looking to utilise an existing mining lease on Flinders Island is hoping its material will be used in the region's construction industry.
A development application to operate three quarry pits on Harleys Road, Whitemark has been lodged with the Flinders Council.
It is located on land about 2.8 kilometres north of Whitemark and will mine materials that can be used for roads, driveways, foundations, decorative use or concrete.

The nearest residence is 250 metres away from the northern pit.
It proposes mining two existing pits and creating a third pit, to extract granitic gravel, fractured rock/coarse base, concrete and sand but no blasting is proposed.
It will be mined using an excavator, before it is stockpiled and some crushed/screened to be transported. An assessment estimated the project would require about six truck movements per day.
Under its existing mining lease, the maximum volume it can extract is 4999 cubic metres per annum, and crushed/screened material will not exceed 1000 cubic metres per annum.
Sediment ponds, of a minimum holding capacity of 50,000 litres, will be constructed by two of the pits and mined material will be stockpiled next to each of the three pits for transport from the site.
To minimise the area of land 'open' at the quarry, progressive rehabilitation will occur, when a section is closed it will be rehabilitated with vegetation or pasture for agricultural use.
The DA is available for public comment until February 4.
