August 8 is International Cat Day, aimed at raising awareness of cats and ways to better protect them.
Launched in 2002, the campaign was established by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and has grown in popularity thanks to social media. Just Cats Tasmania founder Rachel Beech said the day was a chance to recognise the importance of microchipping and desexing, while also celebrating everything cats offer as pets.
"One of the biggest issues we have is there's so many cats that are found and brought into the shelter who aren't microchipped. It's really sad not to be able to reunite them with their owners," she said.
"We also can't forget about our older cats who need homes. We have many senior cats, aged 10 or 12, who tend to get forgotten about. Even though they can give just as much love as the young ones.
"Cats are very in tune to human feelings. So if you are not feeling well or you're feeling down, it will be the cat that's sitting on your lap."
