Justice Michael Brett wholly suspended the sentence against Krystal Lee Reynolds, 29, for 18 months on the condition that she not commit a imprisonable offence for 18 months.
"I will suspend the whole of the sentence with the aim of deterring you from engaging in this kind of stupidity in the future," he said.
"You should stop and think before getting involved in confrontations like this."
In other news:
Reynolds pleaded guilty to wounding the then 20-year-old woman on the left arm and left finger on November 27, 2017, in Invermay.
Reynolds was driving along Mayne Street in her Holden Commodore with another woman when she saw her ex-partner "Cowboy" having a cigarette with the 20-year-old woman.
Reynolds yelled abuse before she stopped the car and got out with a knife in her hand and pushed the younger woman to the chest.
The younger woman threw a punch, which hit Reynolds on the left eye.
Reynolds swung the knife and caused a two-centimetre cut to the bicep and two-centimetre cut to the ring finger.
"I have no doubt that this would have been a frightening and traumatic experience," Justice Brett said.
"Your actions in driving and yelling abuse because of bad blood between you an an ex-partner and then getting out of the car were immature and irresponsible.
"Getting out of the car with a knife and then using it elevate this to a serious crime.
"What you did was dangerous and the consequences could have been worse.
"It is aggravated by the fact that it occurred in a public place."
