Appeal lodged against council's decision to lease 2 Invermay Road

The car park will have more than 850 spaces for the public and UTAS students/staff as part of the university's $360 million relocation plans

The organisation lodged an appeal with the Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal and a hearing is set for July 24.

The grounds for appeal include:

Council's chief executive officer Michael Stretton said the council had no specific comment regarding the appeal, but the responsibility to liaise with the users of the site fell to the Launceston Show Society, after it voluntarily surrendered its lease.

"At no stage did the council have any involvement in these discussions, nor any agreements between those parties," he said.

"The council has already said publicly that it is willing to work with Tasbreeders to provide any assistance we can to identify potential alternate sites for the Magic Millions Yearlings Sales to continue.

"The council recently participated in a meeting between Tasbreeders and the university to try and facilitate a mutually acceptable outcome.

"However, given the proposed construction schedule for the university relocation, and the inability to move the Magic Millions event forward, it has not been possible for an agreement to be reached to accommodate the 2021 event at Inveresk."

Tasbreeders did not wish to comment before the appeal process had concluded.

The organisation made one of five representations objecting to the lease before the council decided none of them showed the lease was contrary to public interest on June 25.
