But that's exactly what's expected to take place at Cataract Gorge at the weekend.
The winter solstice swim will take place on the shortest day of the year, inspired by a similar event usually held in the state's South as part of Dark Mofo.
Organised by Jade Child, the event will also raise much needed funds for food relief organisation Loaves and Fishes.
Mr Child has been taking part in an annual solstice swim at the Gorge for a number of years now.

However this year, in light of the challenges facing the community, he decided to make it an event.
"We look at that date as a time when we are starting to get a bit more sun. It's when we are over the peak of the shortest days, so it's a good date to look forward to," he said.
"It's a bit of a challenge - it certainly gets you out of your comfort zone. Jumping in cold water makes you feel alive straight away.
"This year we thought why not raise some money for charity and we wanted to support someone locally and they do some really good things in the community."
So far more than $500 has been raised for Loaves and Fishes. The church-based charity provides about 70 per cent of Tasmania's food relief.
Mr Child, who has been preparing for Sunday by having some cold showers, said he understood the challenge would be a shock to the system for some.
"The last couple of years we got into the water for three or four minutes. That is the timeframe we will set for ourselves on Sunday," he said.
"But each to their own. Some might jump in for 20 seconds, feel how cold it is and then jump back out. Which is fine too.
"It will definitely make everything else you do that day seem easy."
Sunday's swim will get underway at 9am at First Basin. People are also encouraged to take part in virtual swims, if unable to attend in person.
Mr Child said strict social distancing measures would be in place.
